Addressing Bias in Artificial Intelligence: A Critical Need

I had the inspiration to write an article about AI bias after meeting with a founder who was pitching an AI bot for the business. Quickly, we realised that the bot could not pronounce my or my network's Carribean or African traditional names.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to revolutionise various aspects of our lives, from healthcare to finance, and even entertainment. However, as with any powerful tool, AI comes with its own set of challenges, one of the most pressing being bias. Bias in AI can lead to unfair outcomes, perpetuate existing inequalities, and even create new forms of discrimination. Addressing these biases is crucial to ensure that AI benefits everyone equitably.
Understanding AI Bias
Bias in AI can stem from several sources, including the data used to train models, the algorithms themselves, and even the societal context in which AI systems are developed. Here are some common types of biases that need to be addressed:

- Temporal Bias: AI models can become outdated if they are not regularly updated with new data. This can lead to decisions based on outdated or irrelevant information, which may no longer be applicable
- Overfitting: IBM shows that when an AI model is too closely tailored to the training data, it may fail to generalise to new, unseen data. This can result in biased outcomes when the model encounters scenarios that are not well-represented in the training data.

Harvard Business Review and others highlight Several high-profile cases that have highlighted the dangers of AI bias. In 2015, Amazon had to scrap an AI recruiting tool because it was biased against women. Similarly, facial recognition systems have been criticised for their higher error rates when identifying women and people of colour.
Mitigating AI Bias
Addressing AI bias requires a multi-faceted approach:
- Diverse Data: Ensuring that training data is diverse and representative of all groups is crucial. This can help mitigate implicit and sampling biases.
- Regular Updates: Continuously updating AI models with new data can help address temporal bias and ensure that the models remain relevant.
- Transparency and Accountability: Organisations should be transparent about how their AI systems work and be held accountable for biased outcomes. This includes conducting regular audits and involving third-party reviewers.
- Human Oversight: Incorporating human judgment into AI decision-making processes can help catch and correct biased outcomes before they cause harm.
- Ethical AI Development: Developing AI with ethical considerations in mind from the outset can help prevent biases from being embedded in the system.
